St Andrews Beach hosts the Tom Doak Back Tee Challenge on the second Saturday of each month (February – December) giving handicap players the opportunity to play the course in its entirety from the back tees.   A small entry fee enables participants to play for great daily prizes and also includes a complimentary sausage sizzle on the clubhouse deck in 2012!

The Tom Doak Challenge is named after world renowned and St Andrews Beach course designer Tom Doak. Doak is also responsible for world class golf courses including Barnbougle Dunes TAS), Cape Kidnappers (NZ), Pacific Dunes Golf Club (USA) and many others.

Doak is justifiably proud of St Andrews Beach Golf Course, and defines his work as one of his favourites due to the natural terrain requiring minimal artificial work during design and construction. 

Below is a quote from Tom Doak's web site regarding St Andrews Beach Golf Course:

'While we recognize that not every site lends itself to a minimalist approach, our favorite projects are those where we can find natural holes just lying on the ground, requiring minimal disturbance to build.  Of all the projects we have built so far, the Gunnamatta Course at St. Andrews Beach required the least artificial work:  other than softening greens contours and digging bunkers, only three holes required any earthmoving at all'.
